You Are Somebody’s Mother’s Day
GIFTS Inc. Health & Wellness Blog Series | May 2026There is a kind of love that doesn't ask for recognition. It just shows up: every morning, every school day, every bedtime. If you are raising your grandchildren, that love is yours. And this month, we want to say what doesn't get said nearly enough: you are extraordinary. And those children know it.
The Complicated Truth About This Day
Mother’s Day can bring up a lot. Grief for a child who isn’t able to parent. Exhaustion from doing it all over again. The quiet ache of being unseen while the world celebrates mothers who look different from you.
Those feelings are real. You don’t have to push them down or pretend the day is simple. Spiritual and emotional wellness begins with permission — permission to feel all of it.
Filling Your Own Cup
You cannot pour from an empty cup. That’s not a cliché — it’s physiology. Caregivers who never rest, never grieve, and never receive care eventually have nothing left to give. Here are a few small but meaningful ways to tend to yourself this month:
• Name what you’re carrying. Write it down, say it out loud, or share it with someone you trust. Naming our burdens is the first step to not being buried by them.
• Accept help when it’s offered. Receiving is not a weakness. It is wisdom.
• Find five quiet minutes. Prayer, deep breathing, sitting outside, listening to music that feeds your soul — five minutes of stillness can shift an entire day.
• Connect with your community. Isolation is one of the heaviest things caregivers carry. A support group, a phone call, or a room full of people who understand. The connection is medicine.
Resources for Your Emotional & Spiritual Wellbeing
You don’t have to navigate this alone. These resources are available to grandparent caregivers in Pennsylvania and beyond:
• PA Caregiver Support Program: Offers counseling referrals, respite care, and support services for caregivers across Pennsylvania. Contact your local Area Agency on Aging to get connected.
• PA KinConnector: A statewide resource connecting kinship families to support, including emotional wellness services. Visit pakinconnector.com or call 1-888-548-3369.

This Mother’s Day, we see you.
Not just on this Sunday — every day you show up, pack a lunch, sit through a school meeting, and tuck someone in at night. Every day you choose those children. You are not just raising grandchildren. You are somebody’s safe place. Somebody’s constant. Somebody’s Mother’s Day.
